It gained worldwide visibility following revelations concerning producer Harvey Weinstein in 2017. This period placed victim protection, the silence surrounding certain behaviours and the responsibility of professional environments at the centre of public debate.

A critical reading of MeToo, however, argues that the dominant narrative simplifies more complex realities. It does not challenge the seriousness of sexual violence or the need to punish those responsible. Rather, it questions three ideas: the existence of automatic female solidarity, the explanation of violence through “toxic masculinity” alone, and the idea that patriarchy is its sole cause.

Table of Contents

Toggle

1. Female solidarity: an ideal confronted by collective silence

The first critique targets the image of spontaneous and universal sisterhood. In public debate, MeToo is frequently presented as a moment of unity among women, across social backgrounds and individual experiences, aimed at making long-silenced behaviours visible.

The critique nevertheless points out that cases of sexual violence in the film industry have also revealed prolonged silence. The phrase “everyone knew,” often repeated in testimony or commentary on the Weinstein case, raises a question of collective responsibility: what does it mean to know that dangerous behaviour exists without reporting it publicly or intervening?

From this perspective, silence cannot be regarded solely as evidence of an abuser’s power. It may also reflect fear of jeopardising a career, social standing or professional relationships. This observation does not equate people who remain silent with those who commit violence. It does, however, invite a distinction between claimed solidarity and the concrete ability to act in the face of a system of power.

The case of Harvey Weinstein is used to illustrate this tension. Several actresses described, after the media revelations, experiences or conduct that they say they had endured. The critique considers that breaking the silence relied above all on investigative journalism before testimonies could multiply publicly.

This approach raises a difficult question: why are people with significant public recognition or substantial resources not always able to unite before an external investigation brings a case into the public sphere? It does not allow power relations to be ignored, but it challenges the idea that a shared identity alone is sufficient to create effective solidarity.

2. Toxic masculinity and responsibility for individual behaviour

The second critique concerns the language of “toxic masculinity.” This expression is sometimes used to describe behaviour involving domination, coercion or contempt for consent. According to the critical reading examined here, reducing sexual violence to masculinity risks portraying men as a homogeneous group and overlooking the diversity of behaviours and responsibilities.

It argues that a professional culture may rest on converging interests, silences, individual strategies and relationships of dependency, without every participant being involved in the same way. In the film industry, a producer’s or director’s power over access to roles can create a strong asymmetry. When a sexual relationship is offered or expected in exchange for a professional opportunity, that asymmetry is precisely a central element of the analysis.

The critique introduces the controversial notion of “toxic femininity.” In this line of reasoning, it refers to certain behaviours of seduction or sexuality viewed as means of gaining an advantage. This concept calls for great caution: a person’s expression of sexuality, flirting or appearance never constitutes consent to an assault, nor does it justify harassment or violence.

This critical argument must therefore not be received as a way of shifting responsibility from perpetrators to victims. Responsibility for an assault lies with the person who commits it. It does, however, raise a broader debate about environments in which personal relationships and career opportunities overlap, as well as about the mechanisms that may sustain silence.

The idea of the “casting couch” refers precisely to this confusion between sexuality and professional advancement. The critique argues that some people may regard such a relationship as a voluntary exchange, while others experience pressure linked to an imbalance of power. These situations cannot automatically be treated as equivalent: coercion, consent and professional dependency must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

3. Is patriarchy the sole explanation for sexual violence?

The third critique challenges the explanation that sexual violence stems exclusively from patriarchy. It argues that Hollywood cannot be described as an environment attached to traditional norms; rather, it is presented as a setting where sexual liberation, professional competition and the absence of clear boundaries can coexist.

According to this reading, the problem would not be an excess of traditional rules, but an insufficient number of rules capable of governing relationships between people with unequal power. Sexual freedom, when exercised in an environment where careers depend on a small number of decision-makers, would not automatically protect the most vulnerable.

This position proposes shifting the debate. Rather than abstractly opposing patriarchy and sexual emancipation, it calls for an examination of concrete conditions of protection: reporting procedures, explicit professional rules, separation between career decisions and intimate relationships, and the ability to sanction abusive conduct.

It also criticises media denunciations when they replace the establishment of facts. A public accusation may draw attention to a real problem, but it does not in itself guarantee a fair or lasting response. Protecting victims and respecting the rights of people accused require mechanisms capable of investigating, hearing accounts and determining responsibility.

Proposals based on clearer boundaries

The critical reading of MeToo advocates a return to more explicit boundaries between the sexes and in professional relationships. It mentions the creation of separate spaces alongside mixed spaces, as well as the establishment of clear rules regarding acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. It also promotes an ideal of a lasting relationship and flexible monogamy after a period of exploring romantic relationships.

These proposals reflect a normative vision of relations between women and men. They are not universally accepted and do not constitute a single response to sexual violence. Their value in the debate lies in reminding us that effective prevention cannot rely solely on public reactions after the fact. It also requires boundaries understood by everyone, accessible procedures and constant attention to power relations.

FAQ

Does criticism of MeToo amount to denying sexual violence?

No. The critique presented here maintains, on the contrary, that sexual violence is a real problem. It challenges certain broad interpretations of the movement and the solutions they favour.

Why is collective silence central to the debate?

When abusive behaviour is known within a professional environment but is not reported, silence can enable it to be repeated. Understanding the reasons for that silence is essential to improving the protection of those exposed to it.

Can responsibility be discussed without blaming victims?

Yes, provided that a fundamental distinction is maintained: the perpetrator of violence bears responsibility for it. Analysis of silences, institutions or professional dynamics must never be used to justify an assault or to blame a victim for what they endured.

The MeToo movement encouraged people to speak out about sexual violence, particularly after the Harvey Weinstein case.
