Demands for repentance are seen as likely to sustain accusations rather than ease disputes. An apology is then interpreted as a sign of weakness and as an acknowledgement of collective guilt that can be exploited in public debate.<\/p>\n<p>This approach also rejects historical comparisons used to establish a hierarchy of suffering. It acknowledges that it would be possible to list violence suffered by French people or Europeans throughout history, including piracy, hostage-taking and slavery attributed to Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean. It seeks to explain the hostility felt in certain post-colonial relationships through the memory of a relationship of domination and the sense of powerlessness said to have been left by colonisation. The example of Algeria is used to emphasise that a political defeat may be interpreted differently from a military situation.<\/p>\n<p>The political conclusion drawn from this view is a call for European identity to be asserted. It connects the colonial legacy with contemporary debates on immigration, assimilation, multiculturalism and Europe&#8217;s place in the world. On the other, it is denounced as a means of making present generations feel guilty and as a political lever directed against national cohesion.
