id="Nostalgia_for_a_More_Working-Class_and_More_National_Left">Nostalgia for a More Working-Class and More National Left

On part of the right, references to Georges Marchais, Jean Jaurès, or François Mitterrand are sometimes used to contrast a past left, seen as more serious or more rooted, with a contemporary left portrayed as more progressive on social and cultural issues.

Georges Marchais is particularly cited for statements opposing the arrival of new immigrant workers at a time of mass unemployment. Some interpret this position as evidence that part of the communist left once defended a line close to national preference or a lasting restriction on immigration.

This interpretation is disputed. The argument is that Marchais’s position was primarily based on an economic and social analysis: the arrival of new workers was criticized at a time when many French people and immigrants already living in the country were unemployed. Under this reading, it was not an identity-based defense of the nation.

A Continuity Centered on the Ideal of Equality

The central argument is that the left is marked by philosophical continuity rather than rupture. This continuity would rest on the pursuit of equality and on the idea that social, economic, sexual, or cultural differences should be addressed through political action.

According to this analysis, successive struggles for workers’ rights, equality between women and men, the fight against discrimination, the rights of gay and transgender people, and inclusion policies are not isolated causes. They follow the same logic: reducing inequalities between individuals and groups that are considered unjust.

This reasoning is nevertheless deeply political and contested. Its critics see it as an open-ended dynamic, liable to challenge social norms, cultural inheritances, or meritocracy. Its supporters, by contrast, may see it as the gradual extension of rights and protections to people who were previously marginalized.

The disagreement therefore concerns less the observation that demands have evolved than the meaning assigned to that evolution. For some, it represents radicalization. For others, it is a continuation of the pursuit of civil and social equality.

From the Labor Movement to Minorities: A Shift in Priorities?

Another important issue concerns changes in the electorate and in the priorities associated with the left. Historically, the labor movement and communist or socialist organizations placed workers’ conditions at the center of their message. Over time, the political representation of working-class groups changed, while issues related to discrimination, anti-racism, feminism, and minorities gained greater prominence.

This shift is presented as a strategic and ideological choice: the left would have moved away from part of its working-class electorate in order to rely more heavily on young people, women, city residents, immigrants and their descendants, as well as culturally progressive groups.

The Terra Nova report published in 2011 is cited as a symbol of this realignment. Close to the Socialist Party, the think tank proposed acknowledging electoral and sociological changes. In public debate, the document has been read either as a description of new electoral coalitions or as evidence of a deliberate move away from the working-class vote.

The question remains sensitive: does this change amount to abandoning the working classes, adapting to changes in French society, or some combination of both? The answers differ according to political traditions and the priorities adopted.

Immigration: The Main Fault Line

Immigration is one of the issues around which nostalgia for an older left is most strongly concentrated. Certain historical statements are regularly used to support the idea that left-wing leaders were once more restrictive than they are today.

However, the history of the socialist and communist movements also contains a strong internationalist tradition. This tradition defended solidarity among workers of different nationalities and the protection of foreign workers against arbitrary administrative or police action.

Jean Jaurès is often mentioned in connection with clarifying quotations attributed to him. A phrase frequently repeated in political debates—claiming that the homeland is the only possession of those who have nothing—is presented as falsely attributed to Jaurès. By contrast, another quotation emphasizes the protection and collective organization of foreign workers alongside their French comrades.

These references chiefly show that it is risky to reduce long political traditions to a single sentence or a single episode. The left has defended domestic wage earners, denounced pressure on the labor market, supported immigrant workers, and promoted internationalism. These dimensions coexisted, with tensions varying across periods.

Why Does the Older Left Appeal to Some Right-Wing Voters?

Nostalgia for the older left can be understood as part of a broader nostalgia for an earlier society. It is often associated with more stable social reference points, public debate perceived as less polarized, and a more easily understood political landscape.

From this perspective, it is not always the older left itself that is missed, but the historical context to which it refers. Figures from the past can sometimes appear more acceptable because they belong to a bygone era and can be selectively remembered through a few positions that have become compatible with present-day concerns.

This memory is necessarily partial. It retains certain statements about industry, work, public authority, or borders, but may set aside the internationalism, the centrality of class struggle, the demands for equality, and the anti-racist commitments that also shaped the history of the left.

An Opposition Between Two Visions of Politics

The debate is not only about the left’s past. It pits two ways of defining the role of politics against each other. The first prioritizes equality, reducing discrimination, and expanding rights. The second places greater emphasis on historical continuity, national belonging, collective inheritances, and the preservation of distinctions regarded as structurally important.

Presenting the older left as a natural ally of the right does not fully account for this opposition. Certain occasional convergences may exist on work, sovereignty, or criticism of globalization, but they are not enough to erase philosophical differences over identity, equality, immigration, or the meaning of the nation.

Political nostalgia can shed light on contemporary concerns, but it cannot replace the analysis of ideas. Understanding the older left requires considering both its social discourse, its internationalist traditions, and the transformations that led to today’s political divides.

FAQ

Why is Georges Marchais often cited in debates about immigration?

He is regularly cited for statements opposing the arrival of new immigrant workers in a context of unemployment.
