A criticism may seem obvious to one’s own side while remaining unconvincing to people who do not share its premises. An analysis from the right identifies three common argumentative reflexes considered insufficient: pointing out opponents’ contradictions without understanding their logic, responding with “what about the others?”, and reproaching a camp for failing to follow the moral rules it claims to defend.

These approaches can have a mobilising effect internally. They make it possible to express disagreement quickly and reinforce the certainties of an already sympathetic audience. But according to this view, they often fail to move the discussion forward on the substance of the issue. The challenge, then, is not merely to find an effective retort, but to understand the psychological, moral and political drivers of an opposing position, and then to offer an independent vision.

Table of Contents

Toggle

1. Pointing out a contradiction: useful only if it is real and understood

The first reflex is to highlight what appears inconsistent in an opponent’s argument. The example put forward concerns debates about race: some currents on the left reject race as a biological reality while using categories such as “White” and “non-White” in their analysis of social relations.

Viewed from the outside, this position may seem contradictory. Yet, for its defenders, it rests on a distinction between a contested biological reality and socially constructed categories that have tangible effects. From this perspective, these categories would have no biological basis, but would nonetheless influence perceptions and relations of domination. Mechanically accusing an opponent of contradiction is therefore not enough unless their framework of thought is first accurately presented.

Criticism of inconsistencies may remain relevant when it concerns a clear gap between a stated principle and an observed practice. The analysis mentions, in particular, possible tensions between the desire to deconstruct gender stereotypes and certain highly codified representations of femininity or masculinity. But even in such cases, the argument must be precise: it must show how the practice in question genuinely contradicts the principle invoked, rather than relying on a polemical phrase.

The problem with a merely apparent contradiction is that it reassures the person making the claim without unsettling the person to whom it is addressed. To have a useful discussion, one must therefore honestly reconstruct the opposing argument, identify its assumptions, and explain why they may be open to challenge from one’s own perspective.

2. Whataboutism does not justify one’s own position

The second argument criticised is whataboutism, often summed up as “yes, but the others do it too.” It consists of responding to criticism of a behaviour by referring to comparable behaviour by an opponent. In controversies involving political violence, for example, the response may be to point to violence attributed to another political group.

This reply may raise the issue of possible unequal treatment. However, it does not by itself answer the initial question: is the act in question justified, acceptable or condemnable? The fact that other actors have behaved similarly does not automatically make the conduct of one’s own camp right.

According to the analysis, this type of response can also trap the person using it within the moral framework set by their opponent. It then amounts to demanding identical enforcement of a rule rather than debating the legitimacy of that rule, its consistency or its use. The discussion becomes a demand for symmetry in condemnation rather than a positive defence of a political position.

A stronger argument would therefore require separating two issues: on the one hand, examining the act itself; on the other, assessing whether a double standard exists in its media, activist or institutional treatment. Blending them often results in avoiding the central question.

3. Accusing an opponent of betraying their own rules is not enough

The third reflex is to reproach an opponent for failing to respect the principles they claim to uphold. The example given is the accusation that people or movements presenting themselves as anti-racist may, in some cases, make statements regarded as hostile towards White people.

Such criticism may seek to reveal a gap between a proclaimed ideal and certain statements or practices. But it remains incomplete if it does not answer a more fundamental question: are the moral standards advanced by the opponent themselves legitimate, and how should they be defined and applied?

The thesis advanced in this analysis is that anti-racism sometimes serves, according to its advocates on the right, as a framework for positions perceived as hostile to French, European or White identity. This is a political interpretation advanced by that current, rather than an established finding in the material examined. For those who defend it, its rhetorical value would lie in shifting the debate: no longer merely asserting that an opponent falls short of their own standards, but challenging the motivations and effects of the ideological framework they invoke.

This method nevertheless entails a demanding standard. Questioning opponents’ deeper intentions without specific evidence risks reducing the debate to invective. To be persuasive, a criticism must distinguish between the statements, principles, practices and consequences it attributes to an ideology.

Three principles for a more developed argument

Understanding the psychological dimension of opinions

The first proposed principle is that politics cannot be reduced to an abstract exchange of arguments. Everyone tends to present their convictions as rational, even though personal, emotional or identity-based motivations may also be involved. This approach does not imply that every conviction is necessarily irrational. Rather, it invites people to examine the interests, fears, aspirations and values that shape a position.

Understanding this dimension can help avoid superficial criticisms. The task is no longer merely to refute a sentence, but to grasp what makes a discourse acceptable or mobilising to those who embrace it.

Building one’s own “compass”

The second principle is not to define one’s position systematically as the opposite of the opposing camp’s. The example mentioned concerns the Covid-19 pandemic: judging that a government exaggerated the seriousness of a situation does not, by itself, justify concluding that the situation does not exist or that it was fabricated.

This logic of automatic opposition is presented as a “compass” that always points south: as soon as an opponent asserts something, one need only support the opposite. Building one’s own compass, by contrast, means examining facts and principles according to an independent orientation. It also means acknowledging that an opponent may sometimes reach a correct conclusion for different, or even questionable, reasons.

Articulating a positive vision

Finally, criticism alone cannot constitute a political project. An opposition that does nothing but denounce its opponent risks remaining defensive and offering no collective direction. The analysis therefore calls for defining a vision of the desired society: what idea of the common good should be defended, which contemporary challenges should be addressed, and what future should be envisaged for oneself and one’s own people?

The personal vision expressed from this perspective is inspired by an articulation of national and regional identity, an economy oriented towards European interests, order, freedom and cultural ambition. These orientations belong to a particular political project. Beyond this content, the general principle is that a mobilising argument must combine criticism with a proposal, a horizon and concrete priorities.

FAQ

Why is pointing out an opponent’s contradictions not enough?

Because a contradiction may be only apparent if it fails to take account of the opponent’s intellectual framework. To be useful, it must concern a real inconsistency, clearly demonstrated and understood in its context.

What is whataboutism in politics?

It is the practice of responding to a criticism by immediately referring to the alleged faults of another camp. It may point to unequal treatment, but it does not necessarily address whether the act initially under discussion is justified.

What does it mean to develop a positive political vision?

It means going beyond rejecting an opposing programme by articulating one’s own objectives, conception of the common good and the changes one considers desirable.

An analysis of the limits of three common rhetorical reflexes in right-wing political debates: highlighting supposed contradictions, resorting to whataboutism, and accusing opponents of failing to uphold their own principles.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[2

post-9948","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-best-off
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.6 (Yoast SEO v28.7) -
