MGTOW: Why Some Men Choose to Step Away From Relationships With Women

The term MGTOW, an acronym for Men Going Their Own Way, refers to a movement made up of men who seek to reduce their emotional, marital or social dependence on women. For some, this means avoiding marriage and long-term relationships; for others, the separation extends to rejecting any romantic or sexual interaction.

The movement is based on the idea that relationships between men and women have become too unbalanced, particularly as a result of feminism, changes in family law and cultural norms perceived as unfavourable to men. This interpretation is asserted by MGTOW members themselves: it does not, on its own, sum up the reality of contemporary relationships, but it helps explain their reasoning.

What Is the MGTOW Movement?

MGTOW members generally belong to the “manosphere,” a group of online communities focused on relations between the sexes, men’s issues, dating, relationships and criticism of feminism. This space brings together different trends that do not share the same goals or methods.

It includes Men’s Rights Advocates, who are more focused on the legal defence of men’s rights, especially regarding child custody and fatherhood. It also includes pick-up artists, who focus on seduction, as well as incels, who experience involuntary celibacy. MGTOW members distinguish themselves by presenting their single status as a choice: they often describe themselves as volcels, meaning voluntary celibates.

In its simplest form, MGTOW does not necessarily involve rejecting all women. It means refusing to make a long-term relationship, marriage or family life the central focus of one’s existence. Its more moderate forms allow for brief relationships without marital commitment. Its more radical forms recommend staying away from relationships with women as much as possible.

The Three Core Ideas Put Forward by MGTOW

1. A Society Perceived as Hostile to Men

The first pillar of MGTOW discourse is the idea of a cultural and social environment that has become unfavourable to masculinity. According to this analysis, men are more often portrayed as dangerous, violent or responsible for the difficulties faced by women, while qualities associated with femininity are more highly valued.

This criticism targets popular culture, the media, the workplace and schools. MGTOW members argue in particular that education systems favour calm, compliant and sedentary behaviour, to the detriment of some boys. They also denounce gender-parity policies that they believe encourage women’s access to certain sectors without giving comparable attention to fields in which men are a minority.

These claims reflect the movement’s interpretive framework. Above all, they express a sense of downward social mobility or exclusion felt by some men in the face of changing norms around gender, authority, work and romantic relationships.

2. Long-Term Relationships Viewed as a Risk

The second theme concerns marriage, divorce and the financial or family consequences of separation. MGTOW members see long-term relationships as a risky commitment for men: they fear losing part of their assets, having to pay support, or being disadvantaged in child-custody matters.

The movement is particularly critical of no-fault divorce, which allows one spouse to seek a separation without having to prove wrongdoing by the other. In this view, the fact that one partner can end the union without demonstrating a breach makes marital commitment inherently uncertain.

MGTOW discourse also puts forward high figures regarding the proportion of divorces initiated by women, both in the United States and in France. These data are used to support the idea that women have a structural advantage when a relationship ends. But beyond the figures cited, the movement’s reasoning rests above all on a concern: that of investing time, money and energy in a relationship without any guarantee of stability.

3. Separation as a Protective Strategy

In response to what they perceive as an unfavourable system, MGTOW members advocate a form of separation. Their stated goal is to regain autonomy, peace of mind and control over their choices. In their terms, this is not involuntary celibacy but a strategic decision: not taking part in a game whose rules are seen as biased.

This strategy can take several forms: not getting married, avoiding cohabitation, prioritising financial independence, and devoting more time to work, health, hobbies or personal projects. The most radical supporters value complete distance from women; others limit their approach to greater caution in relationships.

Why MGTOW May Appeal to Some Men

The movement may resonate with men disappointed by breakups, concerned about the emotional cost of a relationship, or tired of the contradictory expectations they perceive around masculinity. It may also attract those who refuse to measure their success by their ability to seduce, marry or start a family.

In this sense, MGTOW highlights an idea that goes beyond conflict between the sexes: a man should not build his entire identity around romantic validation. Developing one’s skills, protecting one’s health, building financial stability and pursuing personal interests can all be worthwhile goals, with or without a relationship.

Criticism of the movement nevertheless points to a risk of withdrawal. Making avoidance a general response may provide short-term protection, but it can also prevent people from having experiences they want or from building balanced relationships. A blanket rejection of women does not make it possible to distinguish between situations, individuals and personal expectations.

The Limits of MGTOW Logic

A first limitation lies in the role given to victimhood. Some MGTOW discourse portrays men as the victims of an all-pervasive female or feminist system. Yet defining oneself primarily through the harm one has suffered can lead to resentment and make constructive action more difficult.

A second limitation lies in a frequently noted contradiction: communities that claim to want to free themselves from women sometimes devote much of their discussion to commenting on women’s behaviour, choices or supposed flaws. This focus may suggest that the announced break is not always genuine indifference, but sometimes persistent disappointment.

Finally, voluntary celibacy is not necessarily suited to everyone’s aspirations. For men who wish to pass something on, share their lives or start a family, permanent separation can become a dead end. The desire for autonomy does not require giving up every relationship: it can also lead to setting clear boundaries and choosing one’s commitments more carefully.

Building Autonomy Without Becoming Trapped in Rejection

The essential question may not be whether to choose between total dependence and total isolation. A healthy relationship requires each person to maintain an independent life, personal projects and the ability to leave when respect disappears. Autonomy can therefore be a foundation for a relationship rather than a reason to reject one in principle.

For those who identify with some of the criticisms raised by MGTOW, a more constructive path is to avoid placing all of one’s worth in romantic relationships without turning the other sex into a collective adversary. Developing stability, discernment and the ability to select compatible relationships remains different from permanent separation.
